Chapter Ten

Luke had some idea of what it had cost Jorie to admit that, and he forced himself to appear unaffected. She reminded him of one her little foxes, ready to bolt at the first sign of danger. But inwardly, he was turning cartwheels of delight. He hadn’t planned on running into Jorie tonight, but he couldn’t deny he was pretty happy with the direction of the evening. He’d thought of little else but her for the past week or so, and he’d been wracking his brain trying to think of a way to be alone with her without spooking her.

“Just tell me where you want me, and I’ll stay out of your way,” he said.

“I don’t mind watching a movie together,” Jorie said, with a nervous smile. “If you want to, that is. Unless you have something else you’d rather do.”

Her words caused Luke’s already vivid imagination to take off, and it was only with effort that he reined in the erotic images. “A movie sounds great,” he assured her.

Jorie frowned. “You came to the cantina for dinner, but you never actually had anything to eat. Are you hungry?”

Luke shrugged. “I’m okay. Don’t worry about me.”

Clearly, she wasn’t going to relax until she’d fed him, but when she opened her refrigerator, he could see the choices were limited.

“I made a peach cobbler yesterday,” she offered. “Does that sound good?”

“That sounds perfect,” he assured her.

He watched as she dished out two generous helpings of the cobbler and warmed them in the microwave. “Which do you prefer, wine or coffee with your dessert?” she asked. “I have a nice white wine that I picked up the other day, and I’ve been dying to try it.” She looked a little sheepish. “But I always feel a little pathetic drinking alone. In fact, I rarely ever drink for that reason.”

Luke grinned. “Far be it from me to let a lady feel pathetic.”

She gave him a grateful smile and handed him a slender bottle of wine. Luke examined the label and gave an approving nod. “An Asher Wolf wine, very nice.”

“Yes, Emmaline and I went to one of his wine-tasting events,” Jorie said, as she handed him two wineglasses. “She’s still trying to decide which wine to serve at the wedding.”

“That reminds me,” Luke said as he poured them both a glass. “How would you like to come for dinner on Thursday night? We try to pull the family together at least once a week, and Thursday has become the night we do that.”

Jorie paused. “That sounds like a family-only thing, Luke. Are you sure I’d be welcome?”

Coming to stand beside her, Luke pressed a wineglass into her hand. “It was my father’s idea,” he said softly. “But even if he hadn’t suggested it, I would have.”

Jorie turned around so that her back was against the counter. Up close, she was even prettier, her wide hazel eyes an intriguing mixture of green, gold and brown, framed in thick, dark lashes. Her skin was smooth
